Contouring has been one of the hottest beauty trends to emerge in the last couple of years. It involves the clever use of shadowing and highlighting to define the face and bring out the features you want to enhance. Previously the preserve of celebrities with professional makeup artists at their disposal, contouring is now available to everyone.
With a little practise and the right products, you too can create the illusion of a perfectly sculpted face and cheekbones to die for. If you want to give it a go yourself, here are some of our tips for newcomers to the world of contouring.
To start with, you’ll need to invest in some liquid or powder bronzer and highlighter, and some angled brushes to apply them. Don’t go too dark when choosing your bronzer; stick to a product that’s one or two shades darker than your skin tone, as this will enable you to create a natural and subtle look. Similarly, choose a highlighter that’s two or three shades lighter.
Before you start applying your bronzer, begin by applying foundation. This will provide a flawless base for applying the shadows and highlights and help your makeup to last longer.
Start off by applying bronzer where the sun would naturally strike your face – that is, the forehead, cheekbones, and around the jawline. This will define your natural bone structure and bring out your features. Blending is the key to a natural look. Make sure to blend the bronzer down from your jaw so you don’t have a defined line between your neck and face. Don’t be too heavy handed with the bronzer at first; you can always add more if you want more dramatic contouring.
Next, apply your highlighter. It all depends on which features you want to make more prominent, but as a general tip, start off by applying highlighter down the bridge of the nose and in the centre of the forehead and chin. As you practise and experiment, you’ll find what works for you and where to place the highlighter to flatter your face shape.
